How the math works

Drywall is sold by the sheet, but you estimate it by area. The calculator works out the surface area you're covering, adds a waste allowance for cutouts and mistakes, then divides by the area of one sheet and rounds up. From the sheet count it derives everything else you buy in the same trip: screws, joint compound, tape, and corner bead.

Wall area is the room perimeter times the ceiling height — 2 × (length + width) × height. If you're hanging the ceiling too, add length × width. A 4×8 sheet covers 32 ft²; a 4×10 covers 40; a 4×12 covers 48. Prefer to skip the geometry? Switch to square-footage mode and type the total directly.

The formula

Check any estimate by hand:

Net area = 2 × (length + width) × height, plus length × width if the ceiling is included
Board to buy = net area × (1 + waste %)
Sheets = board to buy ÷ area of one sheet, rounded up

Supplies run off the net area, not the padded one — waste board gets cut off, never taped and coated — using the rates below: 32 screws per sheet, 475 ft² per compound box, 0.4 linear feet of tape per ft², 8 ft per stick of bead.

Worked example

Take a 12 × 14 ft bedroom with 9 ft ceilings, drywalling walls and ceiling with 4×8 sheets, 10% waste, and 18 linear feet of outside corners around a closet bump-out:

  • Walls: 2 × (12 + 14) × 9 = 468 ft²
  • Ceiling: 12 × 14 = 168 ft² → net area 636 ft²
  • With waste: 636 × 1.10 = 699.6 ft²
  • Sheets: 699.6 ÷ 32 = 21.9 → 22 sheets of 4×8
  • Screws: 22 × 32 = 704 → 704 ÷ 320 = 2.2 lb
  • Compound: 636 ÷ 475 = 1.34 → 2 boxes (about 33.8 lb actually used)
  • Tape: 636 × 0.4 = 254.4 → 255 ft → 2 rolls of 250 ft
  • Corner bead: 18 ÷ 8 = 2.25 → 3 sticks

Switch the same room to 4×12 sheets and the count drops to 699.6 ÷ 48 = 14.6 → 15 sheets — seven fewer sheets and far fewer butt joints to tape.

Which sheet size?

Bigger sheets mean fewer joints but heavier lifts. Here's the trade-off for the 636 ft² room above:

Weights per USG panel data (~1.6 lb/ft² for regular 1/2-inch board; lightweight panels about 25–30% less). Above 4×10, plan on two people or a panel lift.

Screws, compound, tape, and bead

A 4×8 sheet takes about 32 screws — every 12 inches in the field, 8 on the edges — and a 1 lb box of 1-5/8-inch screws holds roughly 320, so one pound hangs about ten sheets. Taping and three coats of all-purpose compound use about 0.053 lb per square foot, so a 4.5-gallon box (61.7 lb) covers around 475 ft². Joint tape runs about 0.4 linear feet per square foot of board. Corner bead is sold in 8 ft sticks, one per eight feet of outside corner.

Common mistakes

  • Not adding waste. Cutouts around doors, windows, and outlets leave unusable offcuts. 10% is standard; cut-up rooms want 15%.
  • Forgetting the ceiling. The ceiling is often the largest single plane in the room — check the box if you're hanging it.
  • Defaulting to 4×8 on long walls. Longer sheets and 54-inch board cut the number of butt joints you have to tape and sand.
  • Buying exactly the count. Order one extra sheet. A damaged corner or a blown measurement shouldn't mean a second trip to the store.
  • Texturing 1/2-inch board on a 24-inch ceiling. GA-216 limits regular 1/2-inch board under water-based texture to 16-inch on-center framing. On 24-inch joists use 5/8-inch or sag-resistant ceiling board.
  • Overdriving screws. A head that tears the paper face holds almost nothing. Set the drill's depth clutch (or use a dimpler bit) so the head dimples the paper without breaking it.

When this calculator is the wrong tool

This estimates flat walls and ceilings for a rectangular room. For vaulted or sloped ceilings, curved walls, soffits and tray ceilings, or fire- and water-rated assemblies with specific board types and layer counts, take off each plane individually and follow the assembly's listing. This tool covers standard single-layer 1/2-inch board.

The geometry is arithmetic; the supply rates are published constants:

  • Gypsum Association GA-216 (Application and Finishing of Gypsum Panel Products) and ASTM C840 — maximum fastener spacing (screws at 12 inches on center on ceilings, 16 on walls over 16-inch framing), the 5/8-inch minimum screw penetration into wood, and the frame-spacing limits behind the ceiling-board advice above. The calculator's 32-screws-per-sheet rate (12-inch field, 8-inch edges) is the common crew rule, slightly more conservative than the GA-216 minimum.
  • USG Gypsum Construction Handbook and National Gypsum installation guides — joint-compound coverage (about 0.053 lb per ft² for tape plus three coats, so a 4.5-gallon / 61.7 lb box finishes roughly 475 ft²), the 0.4 linear feet of tape per ft² of board, and the panel weights in the table.
  • IRC R302.6 — where 5/8-inch Type X board is mandatory in dwelling-garage separation.

Questions, answered

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12×12 room?
A 12×12 room with 8 ft ceilings has 384 ft² of wall (2 × (12+12) × 8). With a standard 10% waste allowance that's about 14 sheets of 4×8 drywall for the walls. Add the ceiling (144 ft²) and it rises to roughly 19 sheets.
How do I calculate drywall square footage?
For walls, multiply the room perimeter by the ceiling height: 2 × (length + width) × height. Add length × width if you're drywalling the ceiling too. Then divide by the area of one sheet — a 4×8 sheet is 32 ft², a 4×12 is 48 ft² — and round up after adding 10% for waste.
How many screws per sheet of drywall?
About 32 screws per 4×8 sheet — roughly every 12 inches on studs in the field and 8 inches on the edges. A 1 lb box of 1-5/8-inch coarse-thread screws holds about 320, so one pound covers around 10 sheets.
How much joint compound and tape will I need?

Should I use 4×8 or longer drywall sheets?
Longer sheets (4×10 or 4×12) mean fewer butt joints to tape and a flatter wall, which is why pros prefer them — but they're heavier and harder to maneuver in tight spaces and up stairs. For tall or long walls, 54-inch-wide board can eliminate a row of horizontal seams entirely.
Should I hang drywall vertically or horizontally?
Horizontally, in most rooms. Running 4-ft-wide board sideways on an 8 ft wall cuts the lineal footage of seams by up to 25% versus standing it up, puts the factory tapered seam at a comfortable 4 ft taping height, and ties more studs together so the wall reads flatter. Vertical hanging is mainly for fire-rated commercial assemblies, or where sheet length matches wall height — a 4×9 stood up covers a 9 ft wall with no horizontal seam.
What length drywall screws should I use?
GA-216 requires at least 5/8-inch of screw penetration into wood framing, so 1-1/4-inch screws are the practical minimum for 1/2-inch board; 1-5/8-inch is the standard pick for 5/8-inch board and works fine on 1/2-inch too. Use coarse thread for wood studs, fine thread for steel. Longer isn't better — extra length just makes screws easier to overdrive and more likely to pop.
When do I need 5/8-inch Type X drywall?
The IRC (R302.6) requires 5/8-inch Type X on garage ceilings with habitable rooms above; garage walls attached to the house need at least 1/2-inch. Beyond code, 5/8-inch is the right call on ceilings framed 24 inches on center — under water-based texture, GA-216 limits regular 1/2-inch board to 16-inch framing to prevent sag — and it noticeably deadens sound between rooms.
